With PARADE Koenraad Tinel presents his new work at the Gare Maritime of TOUR & TAXIS in Brussels.
Following the great interest in his solo exhibition UDSJUEN last year in his native city of Ghent (which attracted more than 53,000 visitors), Tinel is bringing this new exhibition to Brussels, the city where he debuted as a young artist.
Parallel with the exhibition PARADE, from 3 september until 1 november in Tour & Taxis, Tinel will also participate in the BRUSSELS GALLERY WEEKEND (3 > 6 September), with a solo show at Galerie DYS, which will run after the BGW until 18 October.
At Galerie DYS, the artist is primarily showing graphic work, while PARADE focuses on recent sculptural work.
The central middle gallery of the Gare Maritime will house the monumental sculpture The Abduction of Europa.
“Fear plays a role in many of my works. Fear that is on the one hand the expression of what people inflict on one another, in war and conflict, and which at the same time is the cause and consequence of great streams of people who are driven across the earth. On the other hand, there is the fear of nature and human mortality, which is just as ancient. The ancient Greeks expressed both forms of fear in the idea of Phobos and Deimos, which are uncoincidentally the two moons of the planet Mars. During the corona quarantine – though it had little impact on my daily routine, and even led to great creativity – I was struck by how existential fear is in human life.” (Koenraad Tinel in conversation during the preparations for PARADE)
This experience led to an increasing number of figures, which began to form a great procession through the artist’s studio. Alone and yet many. A whirl of figures in which the military parades of his youth were blended with the many forms of (protest) marches and parades that occur today in relation to themes that are expressions of both Phobos (fear) and Deimos (panic). The supposed security of borders – in various forms – is progressively undermined by an increasing sense of porosity, which fear does not have the power to exclude. In Tinel’s parade, you hear both the cyclical events and the temporally progressing roar and buzzing drone of the marching of the drums.
